Experienced Painters for Enmore Homes
Enmore is one of Sydney’s most densely settled suburbs, and nearly half its homes are semis, terraces or townhouses. Much of it is the Llewellyn Estate, the land around Enmore Park that was offered for sale in the 1890s and mostly built out by 1905. Most of the houses date from that period, so you see Federation cottages and semis with Flemish gables, squared bay windows, filigree verandahs and tall brick chimneys, most of them on larger lots with a small front garden.
Inner West Council lists painting or rendering unpainted face brick on Federation buildings as something that detracts from the heritage area. So on an Enmore cottage we clean and repoint the brick, and paint only the timber, render and metalwork that were painted to begin with. We test for lead on anything pre-1970, quote the prep honestly, and protect front gardens while the scaffold is up.

Our Federation cottage near Enmore Park has unpainted face brick. Should we paint it?
Usually not. Inner West Council’s guidance for the Llewellyn Estate Heritage Conservation Area lists painting or rendering unpainted face brick on Federation-period buildings as a change that detracts from the area, and the same goes for original low face-brick front walls. Paint also traps moisture in old brick. We clean the brickwork, repoint where it is needed, and put the colour into the timber joinery, bargeboards, verandah detailing and iron fence instead. That is where the colour sat on these houses in the first place.
We rent out our Enmore home. Can you repaint between tenants to a deadline?
Yes. Close to half of Enmore’s homes are rented, so we regularly work to an end-of-lease or pre-tenancy date for owners and property managers. The start and finish dates are confirmed on the written quote, we use low-odour Dulux interior systems so rooms can be used again sooner, and we leave the property clean and ready for the inspection.
