Commercial Exterior Repaint in Sydney: Old Signage Off, Two Storeys Repainted

AKD Painting repainted the exterior of a two-storey rendered commercial building in Sydney, taking off the previous tenant’s painted signage and finishing the whole building in a clean mid grey. The work was done from ladders on both street faces, with the roller door and entry kept clear throughout.

Project snapshot

  • Location: Sydney NSW
  • Building: two-storey rendered commercial building with roller door, on a corner with a laneway frontage
  • Scope: old painted signage removed, render prepared, both street faces repainted, downpipes and trims included
  • Access: extension and platform ladders, entry and roller door kept clear
  • Warranty: 5-year written workmanship warranty

Signage first, then the whole building

Painted signage cannot just be painted over. The lettering sits proud of the wall and a different sheen shows through a new coat in the right light, so the old sign was taken back and the render under it prepared and spot-primed before the building colour went on. The rest of the render was washed down, cracks were filled, and both street faces got two full coats so the wall reads as one surface with no trace of the old tenant.

Working around a business

Commercial repaints are planned around access: deliveries, the roller door, parked vehicles and the footpath. On this job each face was done in turn from ladders with drop sheets along the base of the wall, so there was no scaffold in the laneway and nothing blocking the entry. Our guide to commercial painting in Sydney covers how we stage larger sites, and our industrial painting page covers steel, plant and protective coatings.

Questions about commercial exterior repaints

Can you remove old painted signage before repainting?

Yes. Painted lettering is taken back and the surface prepared and primed first, so the old sign does not show through the new finish.

Do you need scaffold for a two-storey commercial building?

Not always. Where there is clear, level ground on each face, a two-storey wall can be painted safely from ladders, which keeps laneways and entries open. Taller or obstructed walls need a lift or scaffold, and we say which in the written quote.

Can the business keep operating while you paint?

Yes. We paint one face at a time and keep doors and loading access clear, and can work outside trading hours where that suits the tenant.

What warranty covers commercial painting?

Every AKD commercial job carries our 5-year written workmanship warranty.
