Earlwood runs from the southern bank of the Cooks River to the northern bank of Wolli Creek, and its houses show a suburb that filled out in stages. The oldest stock is rare and mostly sandstone: the Federation stone houses on Jackson Place and Homer Street, and the Victorian stone house on Riverview Road. Anything built before 1970 is tested for lead before we sand. And a detached house with eaves, gutters, fences and retaining walls on every side needs more access planning than a terrace front, more so where the block falls away at the back.

Our Earlwood house is on a sloping block. Can you still paint the back of it?
Yes. Plenty of houses on a sloping block look single-storey from the street and drop to two storeys at the rear. We look at the fall of the land when we quote, then set scaffold or access equipment on level, stable footings, with a licensed scaffolder wherever someone could fall more than 4 metres. That way the rear walls, eaves and gutters get the same prep and the same coats as the front, and they are covered by the same 5-year written workmanship warranty.
Should we paint the face brick on our older Earlwood house?
Usually not. Original face brick and sandstone look their best cleaned and repointed, and once painted they are hard and costly to bring back. Earlwood has no heritage conservation area, but it does have individually listed heritage items, and for those Canterbury-Bankstown Council’s heritage controls say original unpainted brick and stone should not be painted or rendered. On any house, we are happy to paint the timber, render and trim and leave the brick bare, or talk through the options if it was painted years ago.
