Best Exterior Paint for Sydney’s UV: Dulux vs Taubmans vs Wattyl

The best exterior paint for Sydney conditions is a premium acrylic system matched to your substrate: Dulux Weathershield for all-round UV and colour hold, Taubmans Endure Exterior where mould and dirt are the problem, and Wattyl Solagard on timber that keeps moving. Preparation decides how long any of them lasts.

Why does Sydney go through exterior paint so quickly?

Sydney combines high UV, wide daily temperature swings, salt-carrying air and heavy rain events, and that mix attacks paint film from four directions at once. UV breaks down the binder that holds the film together, which shows up first as chalking and fading. Heat drives movement in timber and render, so a brittle film cracks at the junctions. Salt reaches well inland along the Parramatta River, which is why walls in Balmain and Drummoyne wear differently to walls in Marrickville. Rain then finds every crack that movement opened up.

Dulux Weathershield: what it is good at

Weathershield is the most widely specified premium exterior acrylic in Australia, and it is the safest default for a Sydney repaint. It holds colour well under sustained UV, it flexes with thermal movement rather than cracking, and it is stocked with full tinting availability at every trade outlet in the Inner West, which matters when a job needs a second batch mid-week.

It has a blind spot. On permanently shaded or damp walls, mould still gets a foothold if the surface was not cleaned back properly first, and Weathershield is not a substitute for treating the wall. Best fit: rendered and masonry facades, previously painted brick, and the north and west elevations that take the worst of the afternoon sun.

Taubmans Endure Exterior: what it is good at

Endure is built around Taubmans’ Nanoguard technology and its real advantage in Sydney is resistance to mould, mildew and dirt pickup. On the south side of a terrace in Newtown or Annandale, where a wall gets almost no direct sun and stays damp through winter, that resistance is the difference between a wall that looks tired at year four and one that still washes clean.

It also handles dirt on street-facing walls better than most. The trade-off is choice. Colour range and trade availability are narrower than Dulux, so a heritage colour match can take longer to sort out.

Best fit: shaded elevations, walls near heavy tree cover, and rendered surfaces facing busy roads.

Wattyl Solagard: what it is good at

Solagard has been positioned around sun exposure and film flexibility for decades, and it earns that on older timber. Weatherboard and timber trim on a Federation home move constantly with heat and moisture, and a film that stays flexible is what stops the hairline cracking along board joins that lets water behind the paint.

On rendered masonry it offers no clear advantage over Weathershield, so there is little reason to switch away. Availability across Inner West trade stores is thinner than Dulux as well.

Best fit: weatherboard cottages, timber fascia, barge boards and decorative trim on older homes across Leichhardt, Summer Hill and Five Dock.

Side by side: how the three compare

On product warranties, all three publish terms that depend on the substrate, the system applied and the preparation underneath. Those terms change from time to time, so check the current statement on the manufacturer’s own site rather than relying on what a painter tells you in a quote. Worth knowing either way: a product warranty covers the paint, not the labour that put it on.

Which paint for which Inner West substrate?

Older homes add a further step. Anything built before about 1970 in the Inner West can carry lead-era paint underneath, which changes preparation entirely. That is covered in our heritage and Federation house painting guide.

Does the brand matter more than the preparation?

No, and it is not close. The most common reason a Sydney exterior fails at year four instead of year ten is not the tin on the label. It is painting over a wall that was not washed back, not letting render dry, skipping primer on bare timber, or spreading two coats’ worth of paint into one. Any of the three products above will outlast the others on a properly prepared wall and all three will fail on a poorly prepared one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dulux Weathershield better than Taubmans Endure?

Not universally. Weathershield is the stronger all-rounder for UV exposure, colour range and sun-hit elevations. Endure is the better choice on shaded, damp or dirty walls because of its mould and dirt resistance. On most Inner West homes the right answer is both, on different elevations.

Can I use one brand for the primer and another for the top coat?

You can, and it is common on trade jobs, but the primer must be rated for that substrate and compatible with an acrylic top coat. Mixing brands voids some manufacturer product warranties, so if the warranty matters to you, stay within one system.

Which exterior paint has the longest warranty?

Warranty terms differ by product line, substrate and preparation, and the manufacturers revise them, so compare the current terms on each brand’s own site before you decide. Remember that a product warranty covers the paint only. The workmanship warranty from your painter is a separate promise.

Does paint colour affect how long an exterior lasts in Sydney?

Yes. Deep and dark colours absorb more heat and fade faster under Sydney UV, particularly on north and west elevations. Some ranges offer cool-pigment versions of dark colours that reflect more heat, which reduces surface temperature and slows the fade.

How many coats does a Sydney exterior repaint need?

Two full top coats over the correct primer, as a minimum. Bare timber, fresh render and strong colour changes often need a third. A single top coat over an existing colour will look fine for a season and then thin out on the sun-facing walls first.

Do I need to strip the old paint before repainting?

Only where it has failed. Sound, well-adhered paint is washed, sanded back and recoated. Flaking, blistering or chalking sections are stripped back to a sound edge or to the substrate, because a new coat over a failing one fails with it.
